The opening round on Saturday featured a tight battle with Frank Hauser taking the lead with a first day round of 72 highlighted by an eagle, birdie run on the 13th and 14th holes. Close behind were Hingley (73), Jay Lachance> (74), Farrell (75), two-time former winner Mike Sabatino (75) and former winner Mark Jones (76). Other notables who "played themselves out of the tournament" on day one were tournament director Richard Farrell (78), Pete Kosty (80), Sandy Farrell (82) and former first flight winner Jack Griffin (82).
Sunday morning began ominously as thunder storms soaked the Raceway Course. As the storms intensified and Hauser hoped for a deluge, Director Farrell stated "this tournament will go on no matter what". After a slight delay, the tournament got under way. At the end of the front nine, Hauser's three shot lead was gone and Hingley led Hauser and Ace Farrell by one shot. Farrell birdied the 10th hole to tie Hingley for the lead, but by the 16th hole Hingley held a one shot lead over Farrell and a three shot lead over Hauser.
After hitting a 4-iron off the tee on 16, Hingley had about 120 yards in to the green. He then hit his second shot over the green and into a bunker leading to a bogey 5 while Farrell and Hauser both made par 4's. All three players bogeyed the 17th hole putting Hingley and Farrell tied for the lead, two strokes ahead of Hauser on the 18th tee. This is where the fun started.
All three players hit the green in regulation, but all were well above the hole. Hingley putted first from 35 feet and left it 18 inches past the cup and marked. Hauser then made his thirty foot putt for birdie cutting his deficit to one. Farrell stood twenty-five feet from the cup with a scary downhill putt needing a two-putt to ensure a tie with Hingley and a playoff. He stroked it firmly and as the ball got to about ten feet, began to raise his putter as the crowd (pictured left) roared and the putt went in, giving Farrell his record fourth win. Hingley then tapped in for second place.
Championship Flight News & Notes: Hingley's second place finish at 148 was his fourth in a row, all with scores between 145 and 148 .... Finishing tied for third at 149 were Hauser and Sabatino who shot a 74 on Sunday .... Ace Farrell's 72 was the low round on Sunday, one shot better than Kosty's 73 .... 2003 also marked the reemergence of Mark Jones who says he is "back to the Raceway for good and ready to win again in the near future" .... Director Richard Farrell is still waiting for his "day in the sun". His 156 finish, while respectable, is not going to get it done with the big boys .... Jay Lachance was let down early on Sunday by his putter. Usually one of the best putters in the region, Jay could not find the hole on Sunday.

Saturday's first flight opened with the "usual suspects" playing well and positioning themselves for a run at Malley on Sunday. Tied with Malley at 78 after the first day was long-time Uxbridge competitor Steve Tancrell, followed by Rabitor (79), 2001 winner Yosh (80) and Sean Bernard (80). Three shots back of Malley were Tom Bruno and the Uxbridge duo of Doug Beland and Jim Waterman.
Sunday began with Malley bogeying the first hole, immediately falling one shot behind Rabitor who birdied the first. After getting one of those shots back on the third hole with a par, Malley "dunked it" on hole number 4 leading to a double bogey and a two shot deficit to Tancrell. Tancrell maintained his lead until he double bogeyed the 9th hole, leaving him tied for the lead with Malley and Rabitor at the turn.
From there on, Malley put on a clinic. Other than a bogey on 12 and a birdie on 17, Malley made nothing but pars. Tancrell's triple bogeys on the 10th and 12th holes ended his hopes and it became a two man race between Malley and Rabitor. Both stood on the 14th tee tied for the lead after Rabitor birdied the par 5 13th hole. However, Malley's steady play proved to be too much as Rabitor lost three shots on the next two holes and then watched the lead move to an insurmountable 4 shots as Malley made the only birdie of the day on the tough par 3 17th hole.
Rabitor finished second, four shots behind Malley at 156, while the Uxbridge triumverate of Tancrell, Bob Dalfonso and Wayne Morvan tied for third at 158.
First Flight News and Notes: Sunday scores of 75 by Dalfonso and 76 by Morvan make them two of the favorites in 2004. Dalfonso has been close before, while Morvan has become one of the best platyers at the Raceway .... Rich Moulico threw up his usual mediocre 82-79-161 score. Too much time by the pool for the "pool boy" this year .... Former winner Yosh needs some changes in his game .... Good to see Brendan Meehan return to competitive golf despite Jay Lachance's comment that "all Brendan hears these days are wedding bells." .... Two of the Raceway's newest members showed promise as Matt Trimble and Dave Farrell finished with 172 and 173 respectively .... Anyone know who J.O. is?

Murphy (who was beaten in a playoff in 2002) and Rogers came out firing in Saturday's opening round as both shot 38-40-78 to lead Ciesluk and Ed Maroney Jr by one shot. Also in the hunt after the first day was former winner Pat Keeegan who shot a smooth 80 to stay within two shots of the lead. Jonathan Murphy one of the pre-tournament favorites carded a dissapointing 85, essentially knocking him out of the hunt.
With five players within 2 shots of the lead, Sunday promised to be a shootout. The ninth hole shuffled the leaders as Keegan scored a par 3 while Mark Murphy, Rogers and Ciesluk logged double-bogey 5's, leaving Keegan and Murphy one shot ahead of Ciesluk with Maroney two back and Rogers three back. When Murphy bogeyed the 10th, Keegan moved into the lead by one shot, but Ciesluk took the lead for good by parring 11 and 12 as Keegan and Murphy faltered. Ciesluk then played the last six holes four over par, winning by three shots over Rogers as none of the contenders mounted a challenge.
The key to Rogers' second place finish was a par-par finish on 17 and 18 as he picked up three shots on Keegan and two on Murphy as they tied for third place.
First Flight News and Notes: Best Sunday round went to Ricky Palladini who fired an 81 after a dissapointing 90 on Saturday. Palladini is also owed a big "Thank You" from tournament director Richard Farrell as Ricky did a lot of work helping set up the course on both days .... Maroney has shown he will be a factor soon. He and Jonathan Murphy hit the ball a long way and they are learning the game - watch out in 2004!! .... Also showing grit on Sunday was Steve Burns who shot a fine 82 on the heels of an opening 90 .... Jumping up a flight was tough on last year's 3rd flight winner Louie Daigle, but he stuck by Burrillville Open tradition: "No former winners in the 3rd flight". Way to go Louie!!

Finishing second at 183 was Ed Jasinowski another newcomer to golf. Steve Winfield finished third at 190, edging out Kevin Murphy by one shot on the last hole.
First Flight News and Notes: The 3rd flight was loaded with former Burrillville High School athletes who are picking up the game of golf. Jasinowski and Joe Hauser were All-Conference BHS Quarterbacks who led their teams to League Championships, while Ducharme and Murphy were star hockey players who did likewise in their sport .... After "breaking his maiden" in 2003, Ducharme will move up to the 2nd flight next year. Chances are he will still be a threat to win .... Jasinowski and Murphy will be the favorites in 2004. It should be a dog fight.
